Rubio’s Stepford malfunction: the GOP New Hampshire debate

There’s a famous scene in the 1975 movie The Stepford Wives in which human robot Paula Prentiss suffers a massive circuitry meltdown. Over and over she dumps coffee grounds on the kitchen counter, smashes breakfast mugs on the floor, and utters her pre-programmed catch-phrases in an endless loop. In the final Republican debate before the New Hampshire presidential primary, something similar happened to Marco Rubio. Faced with a withering attack from a ready-to-rumble Chris Christie, Rubio delivered a performance that constitutes a whole new genre of losing a televised debate. Like Paula Prentiss, he got stuck in malfunction mode.

Christie’s attack on Rubio, which came early in the nearly three-hour marathon, boiled down to a simple challenge: what has Rubio actually accomplished, other than being a well-oiled sound bite machine? Instead of rebutting the charge, Rubio responded like a well-oiled sound bite machine, reiterating three times, nearly word for word, a canned speech about the evils of Barack Obama. Even after Christie pointed out that it was a canned speech, Rubio went right back to his memorized spiel. Christie dug the grave, and Rubio jumped into it.

Throughout this Republican debate series, Marco Rubio has stood apart as a candidate of superior communication skills. His track record in these events has been enviable, and even though he has shown a tendency to come off as glib, up until this debate Rubio never got cast in the Rick Perry/Dan Quayle mold. This time he lost command of himself. And it isn’t as though he didn’t have fair warning: several of Rubio’s opponents have spent the past week going after him with much the same line of attack that he faced in the debate.

Where did that leave the other contenders? For Chris Christie, it was a good night, not only because he reduced Rubio to rubble, but because he effectively rose to the challenge at hand. Campaign debates are situational, requiring candidates to understand what is needed of them at a particular moment in the saga. With his back against the wall, Christie threw everything he had into his performance. It may not be enough to propel him to victory in the primary, but at least he’ll have gone down fighting.

The two other governors onstage, John Kasich and Jeb Bush, also did well for themselves. Kasich aimed his message squarely at the independent-minded voters of New Hampshire, responding with an agreeability that almost felt like it came out of a general election campaign. Bush, though he will never be a titan of debating, upped his game several notches, even successfully taking on the class bully, Donald Trump.

For his part, Trump managed to stay out of harm’s way, at least to the extent that it’s possible to stay out of harm’s way when much of what you say seems calculated to offend. Trump’s answers were the usual self-referential grab bag of braggadocio and non-sequiturs, but for any candidate with high poll standings, the goal is essentially to avoid incoming fire–most of which, in this case, was directed at Marco Rubio instead.

Ted Cruz, fresh from winning in Iowa, was unable to parlay his momentum into a debate triumph in New Hampshire. As a performer, Cruz has many strikes against him: a mannered smarminess that permeates almost everything he says, an unpleasant voice that grates like a buzzsaw, and a face like a character actor from a 1960s sitcom. Visually he’s a cross between Pat Buttram (Mr. Haney on Green Acres) and Al Lewis (Grandpa Munster on The Munsters), without the comedic luster. Does Cruz have any idea how tone-deaf he sounds to audiences who do not share his views? Asked by moderator David Muir whether waterboarding qualifies as torture, Cruz opined that it was not, then added: “I would not bring it back in any widespread use.” Which is good to know.

In the end, this debate was not so much about winners and also-rans as it was about the one clear loser: Marco Rubio. If Rubio had not shown so much promise earlier in the campaign, the loss would seem less momentous. But it is rare, and a little unnerving, to watch a candidate with such innate talent undergo a circuitry malfunction on live TV. Rubio did not spill any coffee or shatter any mugs in New Hampshire, but he may as well have.

5 Ways Toxic Relationships Are Ruining Your Life

We are created for relationships. We long for connection, and often this longing can lead us to settle for less than healthy relationships. Even worse, we may be so hungry to belong, or desperate to connect that we continue in toxic relationships when they are actually ruining our lives and happiness.

Toxic means poisonous, damaging or deadly. A toxic relationship drains the life from you, damages your self-esteem, or kills your dreams. While this sounds deadly, toxic relationships can be subtle and do vast harm before we realize it.

I have the scars of being in toxic relationships and for a long time I believed if I just tried harder, I could “get it right.” Boy was I wrong! I didn’t realize how these toxic relationships were ruining my life, until I got away from them and I was stunned by their wake of damage. See if you can relate to any of these examples.

  • Your bags are packed for the never ending “guilt trip” and blame game foisted on you each time your friend or family member is disappointed.
  • You brace yourself for the self-help friend who is always trying “fix you,” by making subtle, disparaging comments about your personality quirks or ways you are different from them.
  • You leave your needs, emotions, and personal stories at home because your relationship is always about the other person and their wants, needs, and feelings.

If a relationship leaves you feeling degraded or criticized, “less than,” and like you can never get it right or if you hide your authentic self and consistently scramble to please the other person, then the relationship is toxic. And toxic relationships ruin your life in these 5 ways.

1.Toxic relationships destroy your self-esteem and self-confidence.

Our self-image is deeply impacted by our relationships. Spending time with friends and family who enjoy you, affirm your talents, embrace your personality and celebrate your uniqueness, inevitably improves your self-esteem and fuels your self-confidence. When these are high, not only are you more successful, life is more enjoyable. Toxic relationships ruin your life as they most dangerous poison your self-concept, eroding your self-confidence like drops of rain wear away at a canyon wall.

2.Toxic relationships consume your energy.
A toxic relationship is often a marathon of your effort geared toward making sure the other person is happy. Your mind is always on hyper alter scanning their moods and needs while seeking to anticipate anything that could upset or disappoint them. The time you spend together is “all about them,” with little to no room for you to share your thoughts or feelings, let alone ask for their support. Toxic relationships leave us woozy and weak-kneed like exiting a roller coaster ride; sure footing is gone and our energy is consumed in navigating uncertainty.

3.Toxic relationships breed negativity.

Toxic relationships are negative. Something is always wrong with you, the situation, their friends or family, the economy, the weather, and you feel pressure to make it better, even when the situation is beyond your control. Your mindset and mood are impacted by their negativity and unhappiness like being slimed like a Nickelodeon Game Show contestant, with none of the fun.

4.Toxic relationships form a template for your other relationships.
We learn by example and experience. Toxic relationships, while unhealthy, can become so familiar that you seek similar ones with others. Additionally, you may not be able to recognize when a healthy relationship comes along. Toxic relationships foster skepticism and disbelief when someone treats you well.

5.Toxic relationships increase your stress level which negatively impacts your health.
No matter how old you are, health is important for a good quality of life. While you may not be able to control all the contributory health factors like DNA, or family history, you can make choices about the stress you allow in your life via relationships. Toxic relationships are emotionally, mentally and physically stressful, and Psychology Today calls stress “the silent killer.”

Toxic relationships are dangerous. The toxicity may not be obvious, but like poisonous gas, it is deadly. A difficult relationship is not necessarily a toxic one, but if you are experiencing any of the 5 ways toxic relationship can ruin your life, you may want to reassess the relationship. Be honest with yourself about your relationships and be courageous enough to make a change. Your quality of life and your happiness depend on it!

We become like the 5 people we spend the most time with. Do any of your top 5 fit into the category of toxic relationships?

New York Bans Insurance Coverage Of LGBT ‘Conversion Therapy’

NEW YORK, Feb 6 (Reuters) – New York state will bar health insurance coverage of therapy aimed at changing the sexual or gender orientation of young people, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday, decrying the practice as “misguided” and “intolerant.”

Top U.S. health officials have long discredited so-called “conversion therapy,” saying attempts to change lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth are unethical and often harmful.

“Conversion therapy is a hateful and fundamentally flawed practice that is counter to everything this state stands for,” Cuomo said in a statement. “We will not allow the misguided and the intolerant to punish LGBT young people for simply being who they are.”

As of August 2015, four U.S. states and the District of Columbia have already banned therapies that seek to “convert” minors, according to a report released in October by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Another 21 states and the U.S. Congress have considered or are considering bans, the report said.

Under New York’s new regulations, the state would bar private and public health insurers from paying for coverage for conversion therapy to a person under the age of 18.

Additionally, the state’s Medicaid program, which provides health coverage to the poor, will not cover the practice, and the New York State Office of Mental Health will prohibit facilities under its jurisdiction from providing the treatment to minors.

Dave McGillivray – Accomplisher

2016-01-30-1454187334-8199934-dave9.jpg

Dave McGillivray is a runner, race director, entrepreneur, philanthropist, author, and athlete. In 1978, he ran across the United States, over 3400 miles, ending at Fenway Park in order to raise money for the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and he repeated this run in 2004 raising $ 300,000 for charities benefiting children. He has run 142 marathons, has organized over 1000 race events, has delivered over 1900 motivational speeches, has been the race director for the Boston Marathon for 29 years, and has raised millions of dollars in the name of local charities. In 2006 he authored the book, The Last Pick: The Boston Marathon Race Director’s Road to Success, with Linda Glass Fechter, where he talked about where his drive to accomplish comes from, having always been the last pick for team sports growing up. He’s now putting the finishing touches on a new children’s picture book, The Last Pick: The True Life Story of Boston Marathon Race Director, Dave McGillivray, which he’s writing with Nan Feehrer. It’s an inspiring memoir that tells of his early rejection for being small, his overwhelming drive to be a professional athlete (not easy at 5’4″) and his ultimate success in the world of running and in helping others reach their big dreams. Dave says his mission in life is to instill confidence in others through small wins which eventually lead to greater wins, and to teach others to stop waiting to be picked and to instead pick themselves. He is hopeful that the picture book will help to instill courage and determination in children before they are jaded against sports by being picked last, or not at all, for the team. I recently sat down with Dave to find out what it takes to accomplish every goal you set out for yourself, and what it takes to win. Step into the life of Dave McGillivray, world class accomplisher.

A Defining Moment: Dave attempted his first Boston Marathon in 1972 at the age of 17. He had not trained for it. He simply decided to run. He called his biggest fan, his grandfather, to let him know he would be running, and his grandfather said he’d be at the race to cheer him on. Dave’s body couldn’t handle the challenge, and he dropped to the ground midway through the race and was taken to the hospital. His grandfather waited on the sidelines, but Dave never ran by. The next day, Dave talked to his grandfather and apologized for failing. His grandfather reminded him that there’s no such thing as failure when you learn from a mistake, and what Dave had learned was not to be reckless. He would try again next year, and he would properly train to finish, and his grandfather promised him he would be there again next year to cheer him on. Dave’s grandfather died two months later. One year later, Dave ran the Boston Marathon again. He was five miles from the finish when his body gave out and he dropped to the ground. He sat on the ground for a moment and looked around, in shock that his body was going to defeat him once again. Then he noticed something unusual. He had dropped to the ground right in front of Evergreen Cemetery, where his grandfather had been laid to rest. Dave realized at that moment that his grandfather had kept his promise, he was there cheering him on, and so Dave would have to fulfill the promise he made as well. Dave pulled himself off the ground and finished that race. Dave says that he learned at that moment that pressure is a privilege. It can defeat you or it can define you for the better. Dave says that every once in a while you will find yourself in a moment in which you know it will define the rest of your life, and those are the moments you must rise to the occasion and succeed. For Dave, his defining moment was 5 miles from the finish line in front of Evergreen Cemetery with his greatest advocate cheering him on.

2016-01-30-1454187441-6782571-Dave3.jpg

Stop Playing Their Game: Dave has delivered more than 1900 motivational keynote speeches to corporations and schools. He says his goal in life is to inspire people to understand that they can live life on their own terms. This is why he wrote his book, The Last Pick. He says that instead of waiting to be picked for someone else’s game, and rather than play by someone else’s rules, it’s time for people to make their own game, and their own rules. He says that when you make your own rules, success is the only option. You end up living up to your own expectations of success. As part of his keynote speech, Dave always asks the crowd if there’s anyone in the room who has ever wanted to someday run their first marathon. He says that inevitably a handful of people raise their hands. He chooses one and brings him or her up to the stage, and he awards them a marathon finisher’s medal, and then he asks the crowd to give this person a standing ovation. He explains to the crowd that this is what it’s like when you finish the last mile of the race, crowds cheering you on, inspiration pouring from strangers like magic. He lets the person keep the medal, and he says, “Send it back to me when you run your first marathon so I can use it to inspire someone else.” Of roughly 400 medals he’s given out at keynotes, about 380 have come back from people with warm letters about their journey of completing their first marathon. Dave says it’s never about winning the marathon, it’s about winning your own game, by your own rules.

2016-01-30-1454187386-6770425-dave.jpg

Fit Doesn’t Mean Healthy: Two years ago, Dave went for one of his daily runs and he noticed it was difficult to breath. He went to a doctor and was told that he was in tip top shape. Still, he didn’t feel great. He went back to his doctor and insisted on more testing because he just knew something wasn’t right. The additional testing uncovered severe coronary artery disease with 70% blockage of his arteries. As it turned out, Dave, a top athlete who had run more than 150,000 miles in his lifetime, wasn’t that healthy at all. In order to reverse the damage of the disease, he changed his diet and nutrition and lost 27 pounds. Dave says that the big lesson here is that we all must be our own best advocates when it comes to health. He says that this is especially true for athletes. He says that athletes are bred to fight through pain, but what they need to realize is that some pain is much more than just “challenge” pain, it’s actually “warning” pain. He says that if you have big dreams in life, you have a responsibility to make sure you are healthy enough to achieve them.

Remember Your Why: Dave completed his first marathon in 1973 and 14 years later he was hired as the director of the Boston Marathon, and has been directing this race as well as hundreds of others around the country since then. He says that the first year he was directing the race, he remembers getting there at 4:30 in the morning and working all day long, until about 8pm. That’s when he realized that this would be the first Boston Marathon he hadn’t run in 14 years. He says that the only reason he even had this job was because he lives for accomplishing these marathons and that he would never love his job if it prevented him from running the race. And so, after working a 16 hour shift directing the Boston Marathon, he ran it too, and was the last one to cross the finish line. He’s been doing this ever since then, always directing the race first, then running it once everyone else has had their chance to finish.

Dave says that what he’s learned about himself ever since he scraped himself off the ground at Evergreen Cemetery in 1973, is that he can be, do, and have anything in the world he wants. He is a world class accomplisher, who is now on a very focused mission of helping others realize they can accomplish anything too.

Marco Rubio’s Long Game

“A strong third.” Marco Rubio’s campaign, careful about expectations, insisted this was still their goal in Iowa after the debate last night. Iowa, alive this season with a plains fury, has always seemed unlikely territory for the controlled Floridian. And yet, yesterday afternoon, an NBC News poll put his Iowa support at eighteen per cent, not too far behind Ted Cruz’s twenty-five per cent.

The 5 Keys to Manifesting Your Dreams

How important to you are your dreams of a better you and a better world?

2016-01-29-1454105491-6625611-butterflymanifestingsmall2.jpg

If they are a priority (which is a secret for making them happen), then you might want to use these proven ingredients:

1. Get clear on what you want.

You must know what you are shooting for to hit the target. Is it more money, a better career, better health, a wonderful partner or something else? Getting clear helps you to be creative, which includes power, decisiveness and determination. Writing it down makes it more real.

The balance comes from being specific yet flexible. To focus on what you want and be open to something different or greater coming into view.

If you seek more money, then maybe a gift or better job shows up. If you want greater health, then maybe a new diet, exercise and healing strategies come into play. And the wonderful person you seek might be quite different than you first imagined.

Be open to opportunities, which can be seen if your eyes are open to the whole landscape, not just fixed on one thing.

2. Connect with your inner guidance.

Soul, inner wisdom, infinite, source, God or whatever you call it. There is a greater you available. It’s there waiting for you to connect with your vaster wisdom.

It’s fine to want material things — your soul will show you how it aligns with your inner being and your life journey.

3. Be intentional.

It is up to you to do your part. Empower yourself by taking the next steps being revealed for your manifestation.

It may be learning new skills or gathering resources. It may be waiting and being patient. Find out by being in the moment and open to any hunches, leads and other guidance.

4. Surrender.

If you’ve added the above ingredients, you’ve done your part. You’ve done due diligence. Now it’s time to let the universe take care of things. Let go.

A big hangup is time. Avoid getting hungup on the “when,” on the arrival of your manifestation. We know this can be challenging. (“Isn’t the job, money, person ever going to show up?”)

Some things take longer, sometimes much longer, than wished for.

As the Serenity Prayer reminds us:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

5. Get support.

Don’t be the Lone Ranger. Do what successful people do: Get support, which includes people, groups, resources and education.

Isn’t it your time to manifest your dreams?

Going further: If you would like to explore further into manifesting your dreams see our Holistic Life Coaching and Healing Success Kit.

Acclaimed Media Exec Explains How She Found The Key To Her Healthy Marriage

As the creator and executive producer of VH1’s “Love & Hip Hop” series, Mona Scott-Young is the definition of a strong career woman. She’s praised for her ambition, commended for her business savvy and lauded for running her multimillion-dollar company, Monami Entertainment.

At home, though, the tough-minded executive does things a little differently.

As Scott-Young says during an appearance on the new relationship show “It’s Not You, It’s Men,” her sharp approach to business is different from how she approaches her marriage.

“Yes, sometimes I’ve got to steamroll through the day to get what I need done. But I have to also understand, when I get home, I’m in a partnership,” she says. “Although we do have these reverse roles and he’s an amazing support system, I’ve got to support him just as much.”

This give-and-take is essential in maintaining her healthy marriage, Scott-Young adds, even though it’s not always easy.

“It’s still work, every single day. I go home and some days, he’s like, ‘[Buzzer sound]. Check that at the door. This is not a business deal. This is your home,'” she says.

That’s when Scott-Young says she shifts her energy — happily so.

“I’ve chosen to be in this relationship. I’ve chosen to be with him,” she says. “So it is my responsibility to make sure that I’m taking care of him as much as he takes care of me.”

The polarizing discussion about what it takes to have a healthy marriage continues on this weekend’s episode of “It’s Not You, It’s Men,” airing Saturday, Jan. 30, at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.

Voodoo Doughnut Creates Ammon Bundy Donut, Says ‘Welcome To Portland’

Voodoo Doughnut has a sweet and doughy message for Ammon Bundy: “Welcome to Portland.”

A photo posted by Voodoo Doughnut (@voodoodoughnut) on

The popular Portland-based bakery created the special treat after Bundy’s arrest on Tuesday.

The militia leader, who’s currently behind bars in Portland, was arrested with seven other militants following his group’s month-long occupation of an Oregon federal wildlife refuge.

Voodoo Doughnut’s co-owner Kenneth Pogson said the Bundy-themed baked good had been his idea.

“We’re trying to avoid politics,” he told The Oregonian, “but this whole thing seemed like such a big deal — with them taking public property, armed to the teeth, making a stand that they thought everyone would join. It was a debacle that was on everyone’s mind, left or right.”

He added that the doughnut had been created as “more of a commentary on contemporary culture and the so-called patriot movement giving Oregon a bad name” than as a jibe to the militants themselves.

There was also no intention, he said, of diminishing the death of Robert “LaVoy” Finicum, a spokesperson for the militants who died during a confrontation with law enforcement on Tuesday.

The Bundy-inspired treat is not for sale, the bakery said.

Voodoo Doughnut, which now has several locations around the country and even one in Taiwan, has earned a reputation for referencing pop culture and current events in its baked goods.

The bakery, for instance, recently paid homage to the late David Bowie and Alan Rickman with special tribute donuts.

Comfort for Your Failed New Year’s Resolution

2016-01-28-1454019987-160638-resolution3.JPG

“You know what the problem is with making any sort of effort to better ourselves?”

“What?” I asked, as a took a sip of my coffee.

“It’s just a set up for failure,” my friend moaned. “I mean, really,” she continued, licking some whipped cream off the top of her mocha. “What’s the point of a New Year’s Resolution aside from reminding us come February that we’re completely incapable of changing ourselves?”

I had to agree with her, even though the optimist in me wanted to offer a more encouraging perspective. Maybe the situation wasn’t as bleak as she had depicted to be, but I had to admit that the bleakness was worthy of consideration.

Part of why I related to her was because I had recently read and acted on Kondo’s best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. It inspired me to tackle my house with the sort of vigor that I thought might turn everything around in a weekend. Instead, it merely led to me waving the white flag of surrender when it comes to home organization. As I had mentioned to another friend, soon after the new year: “Attempting to organize my mudroom was possibly the most discouraging thing I’ve ever done. Seriously, if someone walked into the chaos of that room they’d never believe I spent multiple days clawing out and disposing of hundred of objects.”

“Wait a minute,” my friend remarked, “why were you starting with your mudroom? You broke all her rules: clothes first; go by category, not by room.”

“Yes, but those rules don’t work for me,” I rationally explained, “because our clothes are not a problem, and it would take me a year to come up with categories for every strange item in my mudroom: un-inflated water balloons, Chinese herbs, ear muffs, crayons, jump ropes, glitter glue, vacuum accessories, and bloody plastic appendages used in my son’s horror films (would upper-body limbs and lower-body limbs be categorized separately?)

The point is that before I was done with that one room, I had given up on the entire project. “Maybe we’ll just live on in a messy, unorganized home until we move out or die off and there can be an estate sale.”

My defeat reminds me of a story published in The Onion back in 2005: “Search For Self Called Off After 38 Years.” Reading the first few sentences still makes me laugh.

“CHICAGO– The longtime search for self conducted by area man Andrew Speth was called off this week, the 38-year old said Monday. ‘I always thought if I kept searching and exploring, I’d discover who I truly was . . . Well, I looked deep into the innermost recesses of my soul, I plumbed the depths of my subconscious, and you know what I found? An empty, windowless room the size of an aircraft hangar. From now on, if anybody needs me, I’ll be sprawled out on this couch drinking black-cherry soda and watching Law & Order like everybody else.”

In a similar vein, Pema Chodron describes a cartoon in her audio recording entitled, True Medicine: “There’s this man kneeling by his bed, looking upward, with his hands grasped in prayer. He’s saying ‘I asked you as nicely as I could to make me a better person, but apparently you couldn’t be bothered.’ “

Even if our 2016 resolutions are moving along somewhat successfully, probably most of us can relate to these feelings of discouragement regarding our well-intended attempts to improve the state of our spiritual lives, our daily habits, or our homes. Sometimes, we might find ourselves having no one to blame but ourselves, while at other times we might be able to point to others or the trickery of the world as culprits of our downfall (“if only I didn’t have the stress of my boss/child/partner,” “if only the gym hadn’t changed its hours!”). I felt this trickery last year in discovering I had a food sensitivity to quinoa. I’ve been angry at this grain ever since, even cursing it last month as I drove by it on a billboard for Panera’s new Mediterranean salad. I always felt mildly guilty when eating gluten or dairy, assuming if I ever felt stiff or achy they were the causes. But if there’s any food on the planet currently being heralded as the thing to eat, it’s this gluten-free, protein-rich grain. Being told I was allergic to it was the sort of thing that made me want to say– just as my friend had: “Yes, a ton please! I’ll take a ton of whipped cream on my mocha!”

As we kept chatting that day, however, we did land on some silver linings and encouragements around resolutions.

One thought worth considering–maybe we should all throw in some resolutions that are easily attainable or actually pleasurable to achieve. For example, I decided that a focus for the new year should be to watch more television. By that, I mean some of the really good shows that I hear people talking about and have no idea what they’re referring to because I watched maybe, at most, 2 hours of television a month last year. The good news with a resolution like this is you can feel good about it whether or not you’ve accomplished it–either way, you can describe the situation in your favor.

I think we also need to give ourselves credit, as a species, for our willingness, year after year, to return to the tradition of New Year’s Resolutions even when our track record for keeping them is not very impressive. I think this sort of determination demonstrates our collective spirit of willingness to try, along with our unrelenting hopefulness that new beginnings can occur. Even if we’re not perfect in implementing these new beginnings, we might find comfort in thinking about how much worse off we’d be if we never tried at all. I like to remind myself of this on the many days when I don’t have nearly the amount of time I’d like for exercise. A 10-minute walk might not be the same as a 30-minute run, but I recognize that if I hadn’t tried to hold a half-hour to run, I wouldn’t even be taking a brief walk. There are even moments, I have to admit, when it’s been easier to locate something in my not-ideal-but-better-than-it-was mudroom

There may be gifts to be found in the intersection between our goals and desires and our discipline and imperfection–all the ways we simultaneously strive for betterment and long for momentary pleasure. Maybe the tension we experience among these things is an inherent part of inhabiting a human life. Maybe, too, when we remember to come up for air from time to time–venting and chuckling a bit at our predicament–we’re better able to endure life’s absurdities and annoyances, along with taking in all the good stuff offered along the way.

Plus, if it’s worth any consolation–there’s always February. Maybe January was just a warm-up . . . :)

Pressed On Obamacare Replacement, Ted Cruz Dodges The Question

For a moment during Thursday’s GOP debate, it looked like a leading Republican presidential candidate might actually explain how he intends to replace Obamacare.

And then — poof — the moment passed.

It happened when Fox News host and moderator Bret Baier asked Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) about the Affordable Care Act — and decided to press Cruz on what he intended to do about people now getting health insurance because of the law.

“If you repeal Obamacare, as you say you will, will you be fine if millions of people don’t have health insurance? And what is your specific plan for covering the uninsured?” Baier asked.

It’s a fine question. The House, under Republican control, has voted more than 50 times to repeal the health care law. Just a few weeks ago, the Senate, also under GOP control, finally passed a repeal bill, as well. But neither chamber has had so much as a committee hearing to design a replacement. And with the notable exception of Jeb Bush, who actually put together a health care proposal with details, the Republican presidential candidates have been nearly as silent.

So how did Cruz answer the question? He began by offering a familiar, one-sided account of the the law’s impact — saying it had raised premiums, taken insurance away from millions and caused millions more to lose their part-time jobs. Then he promised to “repeal every word of Obamacare,” prompting strong applause.

At this point Cruz had made two misleading statements — about premiums and people losing policies — and one statement — about part-time jobs — that was just plain false. But he still hadn’t answered Baier’s question.

And it turned out he had no intention of doing so. Cruz proceeded to explain that, with the health care law gone, he’d do three things: allow people to purchase insurance across state lines, decouple employment and insurance, and allow more people to use health savings accounts.

By themselves, these would do very little to help the uninsured get coverage. (Worse still, allowing cross-state purchasing would undermine state regulations on benefits, making it harder for people with serious medical problems to find comprehensive coverage.)

Truth is, Republicans don’t have a better alternative to the health care law. All of their plans result in far fewer people having insurance, or the people with insurance having much weaker coverage — because making coverage available to all, at affordable prices, requires a combination of spending, taxes and regulation that Republicans can’t abide. (For a longer explanation, read this.)

Cruz, who is no dummy, knows this as well as anybody. But he also knows it sounds cruel to say he’d take away Obamacare without a replacement. And so he did what every other Republican does when pressed on his alternative: He dodged the question entirely.

    Mistakes, Forgiveness and Moving On

We all make mistakes. And yeah, those regrets last, well, a lifetime!

A few days ago, I watched the video showing Anjali, the doctor of Uber fame, destroying her future, albeit without knowing it. Today I watched her apologizing and owning up to her mistake. I know that the world will forget her soon. The Uber driver will forget what she did, over time. But will she ever forget? Probably not. But the worst of it will be if she doesn’t forgive herself.

All of us make mistakes. Sometimes we repeat them. Many times we plan to change but we become victims to circumstances such as high self-expectations, low (er) self-esteem, desires, the need to show-off, and the list goes on and on.

But eventually at some point, there’s a trigger that makes us stop fooling the world, and even more importantly, stop fooling ourselves. At that point, ownership of our mistakes is important.

And then comes the hard part, forgiving ourselves. The forgiveness is necessary, to move forward, to heal ourselves, and to heal others who suffered when we were being stupid.

Anjali Ramkissoon is not the first person who got drunk and did stupid things. And she won’t be the last. I hope she will be reprimanded, asked to do community service, and reinstated at the hospital. Not allowing her to become a doctor and fulfill her destiny is too steep a price to pay for her one bad decision of drinking and throwing her weight around.

This blog is for all those people, young and old, who have done stupid things while drunk, and now find themselves unable to forgive themselves, playing catch-up. Let it go. God forgives you. Your family forgives you. Now you need to forgive YOURSELF!!!

6 Steps To Turn Mindless Activities Into Mindful Ones

Coloring books for adults currently top a number of bestseller lists. And they have become a staple in bookstores, grocery stores and drugstores. But, let’s be clear, coloring in a book doesn’t automatically mean that you’re being mindful. Mindfulness isn’t about what you are doing; it’s about how you are doing it. There are techniques to apply and steps to learn. And we can actually apply these same steps to other “mindless” activities to make them more mindful too. With that in mind, we partnered with Aetna and turned to mindfulness experts to find out what steps to take to turn “ordinary” activities — like knitting, gardening, coloring or even drinking coffee — into mindful ones.

    1. Breathe: Begin With Respiration
“Mindfulness starts with awareness of breathing,” explained Cheryl Jones, a mindfulness expert, resilience coach and a wellness program lead for Aetna. And the key word here is “awareness.” Jones said there isn’t a right way or a wrong way to breathe. “There’s no particular technique. You don’t need to take a deep breath. Your breath may be shallow or choppy. What is important is to notice that the body is breathing — to have a gentle awareness of the air flowing in and out. Every time we pay attention to one breath moving in and out of the body, we connect the body and the mind.”

    2. Notice: Take It All In
Use all of your senses and pay attention to the details of your activity. It is recognition and appreciation of the moment. “There are thousands of details arising in every moment that can pass by without conscious notice such as the quality of light where you are sitting, the texture of your clothing, the aroma of your cologne, the gentle hum of the clock or the way the ‘T’ on your keyboard has rubbed off from use,” said Jamie Derrick, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist and associate clinical professor at the University of Idaho. “When we engage in the world with the eye of a poet or artist, we see that nothing that seems ordinary really is.”

    3. Engage: Be In The Moment
Pay attention to your task or activity. Don’t focus on the past. Don’t plan ahead about what to make for dinner. “This is challenging and takes practice, because every moment our attention is pulled in many directions,” said Jenny Mills, M.Ed., founder of Roots & Wings, an organization working to make mindfulness accessible to teachers, youth, and families. “I always talk about attention like a flashlight in your brain. With mindfulness, we strengthen our ability to control our ‘flashlight of attention’ so it stays put where we want it to be.”

Laury Rappaport*, Ph.D., founder and director of the Focusing and Expressive Arts Institute, agreed: “There are times in certain activities when the artist or ‘creator’ gets into the ‘flow.’ In these moments, thoughts, feelings and body sensations can even take a back seat and the dominant feeling is one of peace and calm, where time disappears.”

    4. Discover: Delight In The Unexpected
Try as you might, your mind will — in fact — wander, even when you are in the moment, and that is OK. These thoughts, discoveries or new connections that are made when one’s mind wanders help “stimulate creativity and inspire innovation,” Jones said. These are occasions when we may grasp upon something that will help us solve problems with out-of-the-box ideas.

“When painting, for example, you may be focusing on the strokes of the paintbrush as it glides along your page, when suddenly you realize your attention has shifted to thoughts of how to mix those two hues of blue to paint the perfect night sky. It is not uncommon for your mind to generate great insights when you apply mindful awareness to the task at hand — whether that be painting or even just breathing,” Mills said.

    5. Accept: Acknowledge Distractions, Return To Actions
“When a person is fully engaged, distracting thoughts, feelings and sensations often fade into the background. But this can change when the critical mind comes in and judges: ‘That’s not good enough. You’re not doing it right,’” Rappaport said.

As your inner critic starts talking, it’s OK to acknowledge the voice; pause; and bring your awareness back to what you are doing. Mills said, “We constantly evaluate ourselves as we do almost anything. There are benchmarks in our head that we are either meeting or not meeting with every move.” Mills added that at these times she advises to gently acknowledge our thoughts, critiques and doubts — and then let them pass.

At the arrival of a distracting thought, Jones said, you allow yourself to “notice” it. “You don’t have to always be positive. Notice the thought, notice what’s distracting you, and then let is go. It’s like watching clouds move in the sky.”

    6. Savor: Revel In The Joy Of Small Moments
“The mind is wired for negativity, and we’re less likely to take in the positive moments. Teach yourself to pause. Be present. Be nourished by the positive moments of the day,” Jones went on. “Taking in those moments can also help us get through the negative ones.”

To savor something is to engage in the “fine art of elongating or stretching wide our pleasurable experience of it,” Derrick said. She explained that when we slow down, focus and maintain our sustained attention when we are doing something that seems ordinary like knitting, cooking or coloring in a book, we can be present to the “beautiful, touching, delicious moments; the joy over the small wonders; and the delights of the everyday experience.”

What Every Environmentalist Needs to Know About Capitalism

What Every Environmentalist Needs to Know About Capitalism

Praise for Foster and Magdoff’s The Great Financial Crisis : In this timely and thorough analysis of the current financial crisis, Foster and Magdoff explore its roots and the radical changes that might be undertaken in response. . . . This book makes a valuable contribution to the ongoing examination of our current debt crisis, one that deserves our full attention. Publishers Weekly There is a growing consensus that the planet is heading toward environmental catastrophe: climate change, ocean acidification, ozone depletion, global freshwater use, loss of biodiversity, and chemical pollution all threaten our future unless we act. What is less clear is how humanity should respond. The contemporary environmental movement is the site of many competing plans and prescriptions, and composed of a diverse set of actors, from militant activists to corporate chief executives. This short, readable book is a sharply argued manifesto for those environmentalists who reject schemes of green capitalism or piecemeal reform. Environmental and economic scholars Magdoff and Foster contend that the struggle to reverse ecological degradation requires a firm grasp of economic reality. Going further, they argue that efforts to reform capitalism along environmental lines or rely solely on new technology to avert catastrophe misses the point. The main cause of the looming environmental disaster is the driving logic of the system itself, and those in powerno matter how greenare incapable of making the changes that are necessary. What Every Environmentalist Needs To Know about Capitalism tackles the two largest issues of our time, the ecological crisis and the faltering capitalist economy, in a way that is thorough, accessible, and sure to provoke debate in the environmental movement.

Bernie Sanders And The Liberal Imagination

Last week I critiqued Bernie Sanders for dismissing reparations specifically, and for offering up a series of moderate anti-racist solutions, in general. Some felt it was unfair to single out Sanders given that, on reparations, Sanders’s chief opponent Hillary Clinton holds the same position. This argument proposes that we abandon the convention of judging our candidates by their chosen name.

How to Realign Your Identity With Your Truth

Our identities are made up of our own opinion of ourselves, how we present ourselves to the world, as well as the narrative and myriad descriptive words we use to communicate who we are. These include our roles, such as mother and friend, as well as our professional identity – or lack thereof. Our identity is the ego’s way of defining ourselves so we know how to show up in the world. Identities are complex and are woven intricately from our life’s experiences, but deep inside you may know you were born with a divinely gifted set of skills, strengths, and personality traits. We arrive in this world with intuitive ways of being, but, unfortunately, the world often twists or distorts our perception of ourselves.

If you believe you are a generous, kind, and happy person, then research shows that you will make decisions and behave in ways that support those beliefs. Conversely, if you had a critical mother who constantly reminded you how slow, forgetful, lazy, or worthless you are, then those beliefs can seep into your psyche and become a part of who you believe you are.

I know women who were born with strength, grace, confidence, intelligence, and truly creative genius who slowly lose sight of those God-given gifts and become shadows of who they were born to be. I’ve experienced this myself. The trials that can be a part of anyone’s life can slowly chip away at that divinely gifted identity through critical spouses, professional failures, etc. to the point that we are no longer the best and most divinely aligned version of ourselves.

I’ve also witnessed people’s lives become consumed by one role or aspect of their identity, such as mother, which soon minimizes other key elements of their identity to the point that these women lose confidence in those other significant parts of who they are, such as public speaker, artist, or other talent.

Here is the good news. We can realign ourselves and our identities to the original plan. The hard times in our lives are meant to give us powerful experience and to strengthen us, not to kick us down for good. I have created a process to remind myself of who I really am despite the destructive stories and negative subconscious programming.

Firstly, think about how you see yourself now – describe yourself and your roles in great detail. The second step is incredibly fun – and that’s detailing exactly the way you see yourself in an ideal world. Are you a playful, stylish, and hip mama? Are you a driven and successful career woman who manages to make time for her friends and family? Are you kind, generous, peaceful, fit, and deeply joyful?

If you feel like you are in the middle of an identity crisis, it might be because you have assumed an identity without really choosing it. It might be one that was assigned to you by your critics or your past failures. Take the time in this new year to examine your character and work on creating an identity that aligns with who you are deep inside and who you really want to be. This, my dear friends, is how you become that woman! Once you fully define this woman in detail, then you have to take the steps to actually become her. This is the fun, but often challenging part! You might struggle and falter at times, but life is all about the experience and the process. There will be moments when those patterns of negative beliefs or old identities creep back in, because they have become habitual. The way to show up as the most authentic version of yourself in this world is a combination of clarity, effort, and regularly checking in with yourself to make sure the way you see yourself is true.

I was inspired to write this because I realized that I had assumed the identity of an overworked, under-resourced, uninspired single mom. I had subconscious beliefs about what single moms experience, and while many of the struggles are real, I am choosing something different this year. I am an indie mom by choice who always puts her family first but rocks her career while continually growing her family’s resources and creating abundance. I exercise daily and am fit and healthy and I make time to connect with my friends and strive to keep my priorities in alignment. My home is a place of great comfort and joy where friends and family relax and connect.

Show up the way you want to in this world, have the impact you desire, and create the experiences you dream of. Gain clarity over the identity of the best version of you…and become her. It is all within your reach!

13 Products You Didn’t Know You Needed For Sick Days With Little Ones

Parents know the only thing worse than getting sick yourself is when one of your kids gets sick (all of your kids getting sick at once is too frightful to even imagine). With little ones under the weather, parents are constantly trying to play catch-up in the fight against runny noses, sore throats and the oh-so-unwanted midnight arrival of — you guessed it — vomit. It’s a battle we’ll win eventually, but while we’re in the trenches … . Well, let’s just say that germs know how to fight dirty.

Since moms and dads only have so many hands to wipe, clean and coddle, we teamed up with Clorox to scope out the products every parent needs for a sick day. From the practical to the, um, unexpected, to the downright weird, these absurd absurdly genius sick-day staples might be just what you need to ease the stress of sniffle patrol. (Here’s hoping you won’t need them anytime soon.)

    1. The Sneeve

    the sneeve
    Image: Sneeve

It’s no small triumph when a parent persuades his or her kid to cough and sneeze into an elbow rather than, say, another human being’s face. But all that snot makes for a whole lot of laundry, and we could all save ourselves some time (and some shirts) by opting for a disposable armband designed with little ones in mind. Enter the Sneeve, which its inventor claims kills 99.9 percent of viruses and bacteria.

    2. A Nosy Soap Dispenser

    nose soap dispenser
    Image: Light in the Box

What better way to encourage the kids to keep clean than by installing a massive, snot-dripping shower gel dispenser? The kids will have some giggles, lather up and wash away all those pesky germs without thinking twice. And you will have a nose on your bathroom wall. Dare we say that this just might be crazy enough to work?

    3. A Big Vomit-Catcher

    haircut cape
    Image: eBay

Yes, we’re really wading into this subject. There are few things less pleasant (and more heart-wrenching) than when a child throws up on his- or herself. Parents want to help! And they also want to save the furniture! Unfortunately, wearable buckets don’t yet exist (dare to dream), so we found the next best thing: a haircut cape that captures any objects (or substances) that may fall from a little one’s mouth. Better yet, it’s enormous enough to fit directly over the kids and their car seats while you’re en route to the doctor.

    4. … And A Little Vomit-Catcher

    vomit bag
    Image: Amazon

Wearable vomit-catchers not your thing? Keep things simple with a travel-sized bag the kids can keep by their sides anywhere they go. Sure, it requires some trust in their quick reflexes, but you can always keep an extra in your pocket to swoop in when the time is right.

    5. … And, While You’re At It, A Remote-Controlled Platform To Carry A Bucket

    remote controlled platform
Image: B&H Foto & Electronics Corp.

It’s sick-day parenting from the comfort of your couch! Take a remote-controlled platform on wheels that you can direct around the house, put an empty bucket on top of it and steer it around to follow in your little tummy-acher’s footsteps. Now you can let go of (almost) all of your worries about the living room carpet.

    6. A Humidifier From A Galaxy Far, Far Away

    darth vader humidifier
    Image: Hammacher Schlemmer

Why settle for an ordinary humidifier when you could have something so much more powerful (and, in all honesty, way more fun for everyone)? Whether your kids love galactical antiheroes or cute cartoons (or both!), there’s a humidifier out there that will put a smile on your little ones’ faces, even when they’re feeling all icky inside.

    7. A Booger Glove

    wash glove
    Image: Overstock.com

Little tykes aren’t the best at wiping their own noses, and we can’t expect them to be. So as parents, we’re constantly swooping in to clean up the drips and dribble — and we’re using up a bunch of tissues in the process. Tired of tissues and snot-covered hands? This water-activated, microfiber glove with built-in soap might just be the Holy Grail for harried sick-day parents everywhere. Or, it’s just another mitten with soap on it. You be the judge.

    8. A Nose-Picker

    nose picker
    Image: Gadgets And Gizmos

You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can only help pick your kid’s nose so many times (and, more importantly, can only prevent him or her from picking and then wiping on the closest piece of fabric for so long). If you’ve got an older kid who has yet to shake his or her nose-picking habit, this gag gift could be the key to fresher sniffers (and, yes, lots of laughs). Hey, anything to brighten a sick day.

    9. Dusting Slippers

    dusting slippers kids
    Image: Amazon

Let’s face it: If the kids are going to be shuffling around at home in pajamas in between bouts of bed rest, we might as well put those little feet to good use. Parents, we present to you the dual-purpose slippers-slash-duster invention you never knew you needed. Enjoy.

    10. A Cartoon Mask

    Image: etsy

If only there was a way to fend off your kids’ awful sick-germs while also showing them that you keep up with their interests. There is, and it’s this surgical mask that features your kids’ favorite characters. Know your audience!

    11. A Precautionary Button

    dont cough on me button
    Image: CafePress

OK, surgical masks may be extreme, even when they’re graced with the faces of beloved animated characters. If you’re feeling less drastic, try a “Don’t Cough on Me” button. True, it might not be effective every time (read: ever), but it can’t hurt to try it out.

    12. A Sickness-Stopping Onesie

    please dont touch me onesie
    Image: Zazzle

Oh, what a parent would do to stop sickness in its tracks. Never again would the whole house fall ill; never again would the tissues run out all at once; never again would you face sleepless nights, impromptu doctors’ appointments and worries over the state of your children’s nostrils. We can’t help you there, but this onesie might serve as as good reminder to stop the spread of germs (assuming, of course, that the little one who’s under the weather can read … and also chooses to heed the onesie’s advice).

    13. A Plush Tissue Dispenser

    gnome tissue dispenser
    Image: Stupid.com

One of the few things that makes sick days less awful for kids (and, let’s be honest, for adults, too): hugs. Lots of hugs. (Because face it, getting their germs is inevitable, anyway.) On top of all the loving squeezes, you can make their forays to the tissue box a little a lot more enjoyable by swapping that tissue box for a plush, huggable, giggle-inducing gnome tissue dispenser. (Just be sure to clean after use, lest you find yourself with a truly disgusting, booger-covered tissue gnome. You have been warned.)

In all seriousness, on a sick day, parents need all the help they can get. You can depend on Clorox disinfecting products to prevent the spread of germs (and sickness) by helping remove germs, bacteria and other nasties from your home, car and other places your little ones get their hands (a.k.a. spit and snot) on.

Baby Bumps: From Party Girl to Proud Mama, and all the Messy Milestones Along the Way

The greatest thing Nicole Polizzi, aka “Snooki,” ever did was by accident. But her son, Lorenzo, was never a mistake. When she and her boyfriend, Jionni, found out she was knocked up, they weren’t married or engaged. She was only twenty-four and living with her parents—and she had zero baby experience. With a reckless, party girl TV persona to deal with, she had a lot to learn and discover in becoming a mother. In this funny and frank book, Nicole shares her experiences, everything from the first sonogram to the nipple-cracking shock of breastfeeding. In each chapter, she tells the unvarnished truth about pregnancy symptoms (“The High Price of Gas”), the ridiculousness of her baby registry (“Butt Paste and Boogie Wipes”) and the lowdown on postpartum life (“Shit Happens”). There’s a ton of useful information, including a list of must-have baby products, MILF style tips, how to keep “I’m a whale” preggers bad body image in check, and how she got into the best shape of her life within six months of giving birth. Although Nicole had to give up partying, she’s embracing motherhood the only way she knows how: with a fun-loving attitude—and lots of leopard print!

Reminder: Even Trump-Hating Conservatives Are Still Pretty Crazy

Podhoretz is not a fringe figure. He is closer to the left wing of conservative-movement thought than the right wing. Even the “reasonable” members of the conservative movement, the ones aghast at the party’s front-runner, are prisoners of a dogma that is totally disconnected from any realistic assessment of the world.

10 Mistakes Smart People Never Make Twice

    2016-01-15-1452900365-5444779-10MistakesSmartPeopleNeverMakeTwiceHP.jpg

Everybody makes mistakes–that’s a given–but not everyone learns from them. Some people make the same mistakes over and over again, fail to make any real progress, and can’t figure out why.

“Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them.”
    – Bruce Lee

When we make mistakes, it can be hard to admit them because doing so feels like an attack on our self-worth. This tendency poses a huge problem because new research proves something that commonsense has told us for a very long time–fully acknowledging and embracing errors is the only way to avoid repeating them.

Yet, many of us still struggle with this.

Researchers from the Clinical Psychophysiology Lab at Michigan State University found that people fall into one of two camps when it comes to mistakes: those who have a fixed mind-set (“Forget this; I’ll never be good at it”) and those who have a growth mind-set (“What a wake-up call! Let’s see what I did wrong so I won’t do it again”).

“By paying attention to mistakes, we invest more time and effort to correct them,” says study author Jason Moser. “The result is that you make the mistake work for you.”

Those with a growth mind-set land on their feet because they acknowledge their mistakes and use them to get better. Those with a fixed mind-set are bound to repeat their mistakes because they try their best to ignore them.

Smart, successful people are by no means immune to making mistakes; they simply have the tools in place to learn from their errors. In other words, they recognize the roots of their mix-ups quickly and never make the same mistake twice.

“When you repeat a mistake it is not a mistake anymore: it is a decision.” – Paulo Coelho

Some mistakes are so tempting that we all make them at one point or another. Here are 10 mistakes almost all of us make, but smart people only make once.

#1 – Believing in someone or something that’s too good to be true.

Some people are so charismatic and so confident that it can be tempting to follow anything they say. They speak endlessly of how successful their businesses are, how well liked they are, who they know, and how many opportunities they can offer you. While it’s, of course, true that some people really are successful and really want to help you, smart people only need to be tricked once before they start to think twice about a deal that sounds too good to be true. The results of naivety and a lack of due diligence can be catastrophic. Smart people ask serious questions before getting involved because they realize that no one, themselves included, are as good as they look.

#2 – Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Albert Einstein said that insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Despite his popularity and cutting insight, there are a lot of people who seem determined that two plus two will eventually equal five. Smart people, on the other hand, need only experience this frustration once. The fact is simple: if you keep the same approach, you’ll keep getting the same results, no matter how much you hope for the opposite. Smart people know that if they want a different result, they need to change their approach, even when it’s painful to do so.

#3 – Failing to delay gratification.

We live in a world where books instantly appear on our e-readers, news travels far and wide, and just about anything can show up at our doorsteps in as little as a day. Smart people know that gratification doesn’t come quickly and hard work comes long before the reward. They also know how to use this as motivation through every step of the arduous process that amounts to success because they’ve felt the pain and disappointment that come with selling themselves short.

    #4 – Operating without a budget.

You can’t experience financial freedom until you operate under the constraint of a budget. Sticking to a budget, personally and professionally, forces us to make thoughtful choices about what we want and need. Smart people only have to face that insurmountable pile of bills once before getting their act together, starting with a thorough reckoning as to where their money is going. They realize that once you understand how much you’re spending and what you’re spending it on, the right choices become clear. A morning latte is a lot less tempting when you’re aware of the cost: $ 1,000 on average per year. Having a budget isn’t only about making sure that you have enough to pay the bills; smart people know that making and sticking to a strict budget means never having to pass up an opportunity because they’ve blown their precious capital on discretionary expenditures. Budgets establish discipline, and discipline is the foundation of quality work.

#5 – Losing sight of the big picture.

It’s so easy to become head-down busy, working so hard on what’s right in front of you that you lose sight of the big picture. But smart people learn how to keep this in check by weighing their daily priorities against a carefully calculated goal. It’s not that they don’t care about small-scale work, they just have the discipline and perspective to adjust their course as necessary. Life is all about the big picture, and when you lose sight of it, everything suffers.

#6 – Not doing your homework.

Everybody’s taken a shortcut at some point, whether it was copying a friend’s biology assignment or strolling into an important meeting unprepared. Smart people realize that while they may occasionally get lucky, that approach will hold them back from achieving their full potential. They don’t take chances, and they understand that there’s no substitute for hard work and due diligence. They know that if they don’t do their homework, they’ll never learn anything–and that’s a surefire way to bring your career to a screeching halt.

#7 – Trying to be someone or something you’re not.

It’s tempting to try to please people by being whom they want you to be, but no one likes a fake, and trying to be someone you’re not never ends well. Smart people figure that out the first time they get called out for being a phony, forget their lines, or drop out of character. Other people never seem to realize that everyone else can see right through their act. They don’t recognize the relationships they’ve damaged, the jobs they’ve lost, and the opportunities they’ve missed as a result of trying to be someone they’re not. Smart people, on the other hand, make that connection right away and realize that happiness and success demand authenticity.

#8 – Trying to please everyone.

Almost everyone makes this mistake at some point, but smart people realize quickly that it’s simply impossible to please everybody and trying to please everyone pleases no one. Smart people know that in order to be effective, you have to develop the courage to call the shots and to make the choices that you feel are right (not the choices that everyone will like).

    #9 – Playing the victim.

News reports and our social media feeds are filled with stories of people who seem to get ahead by playing the victim. Smart people may try it once, but they realize quickly that it’s a form of manipulation and that any benefits will come to a screeching halt as soon as people see that it’s a game. But there’s a more subtle aspect of this strategy that only truly smart people grasp: to play the victim, you have to give up your power, and you can’t put a price on that.

#10 – Trying to change someone.

The only way that people change is through the desire and wherewithal to change themselves. Still, it’s tempting to try to change someone who doesn’t want to change, as if your sheer will and desire for them to improve will change them (as it has you). Some even actively choose people with problems, thinking that they can “fix” them. Smart people may make that mistake once, but then they realize that they’ll never be able to change anyone but themselves. Instead, they build their lives around genuine, positive people and work to avoid problematic people that bring them down.

    Bringing it all together

Emotionally intelligent people are successful because they never stop learning. They learn from their mistakes, they learn from their successes, and they’re always changing themselves for the better.

Do you operate from a growth mind-set or a fixed mind-set? What other mistakes do smart people never make twice? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Sanders and the Theory of Change: Radical Politics for Grown-Ups

Paul Krugman has joined the self-appointed political grownups closing ranks around Hillary Clinton against Bernie Sanders. In a piece titled “How Change Happens,” the liberal economist and New York Times columnist insists, “The question Sanders supporters should ask is, When has their theory of change ever worked?”

That must be right. It’s an excellent, sober, adult question. The answer, of course, depends what you think the Sanders campaign’s theory of change is. Krugman argues, “On the left there is always a contingent of idealistic voters eager to believe that a sufficiently high-minded leader can conjure up the better angels of America’s nature and persuade the broad public to support a radical overhaul of our institutions.” This, he says, was what drove the Obama campaign in 2008. By implication, he seems to mean other quixotic campaigns, such as George McGovern’s in 1972, when McGovern lost forty-nine states to Richard Nixon.

Krugman compares unrealistic, high-minded idealism with “politically pragmatic” governance, like Franklin Roosevelt’s during the New Deal. Roosevelt, he reminds us, cut deals with Southern segregationists and introduced programs like Social Security incrementally. Krugman argues that this dirty-hands commitment to halfway measures, not purity, is what it takes to get things done. Versions of this contrast have become a common refrain: Sanders sounds great, but governing, is messy, complicated, grown-up.

Krugman’s mistake is very basic. He’s wrong about the Sanders campaign’s theory of change. It isn’t that a high-minded leader can draw out our best selves and translate those into more humane and egalitarian lawmaking. It is that a campaign for a more equal and secure economy and a stronger democracy can build power, in networks of activists and alliances across constituencies. The movement that the campaign helps to create can develop and give voice to a program that the same people will keep working for, in and out of election cycles. In other words, this is a campaign about political ideas and programs that happens to have a person named Bernie at its head, not a campaign that mistakes its candidate for a prophet or a wizard (or the second coming of Abraham Lincoln, who gave us the now-cliché phrase about better angels, but had no delusion that words could substitute for power).

The campaign whose loyalists made this idealistic mistake was, of course, Obama’s 2008 run. The candidate spoke so charismatically, and seemed so much to embody a vision of realigned, common-sense, fresh-feeling progressivism, that some of us did imagine he could recast American political loyalties. Back then, Krugman was accusing Obama’s supporters of spewing “bitterness” and “venom” and coming “dangerously close to a cult of personality.” Now he’s pleased that President Obama, unlike Candidate Obama, has governed rather like a Clinton: pragmatically, with the hand he was dealt. He seems to think that supporting Sanders’s “purist” positions means “prefer[ing] happy dreams to hard thinking about means and ends.” And so, he wants us to think, if we are going to be political grownups, we had better put away childish things. Like talk of truly universal health care (his only example of Sanders’s alleged extremism) or, probably, the term “socialism,” whose revival is baffling pundits everywhere.

Adulthood is charismatic and daunting. It always seems to have the drop on you. But sometimes it just doesn’t understand.

Yes, F.D.R. governed “pragmatically,” in the sense that he counted votes and cut deals. Everyone does this, with the occasional exception of Daenyras, Mother of Dragons. But what made it possible for him to pass sweeping changes in economic regulation and social support, changes so radical that his enemies accused of socialism, of being un-American, of destroying the country and becoming an American Mussolini? The answer is in two parts: ideas and power. His administration stood at the confluence of two great movements. The first was the labor unions, which had been building power, often in bloody and terrible struggles, since the late nineteenth century. The second was made up of the Progressives, generations of reformers who worked in state, cities, and universities – and occasionally in national government – to achieve economic security and update political democracy in an industrial economy that had transformed the country in the decades after the Civil War. Ideas, programs, and power swirled around Roosevelt, gave his agenda shape, and pressed it forward.

These movements were sources of ideas, and also of power. Why did all those enemies and reluctant allies end up meeting Roosevelt halfway? The answer was not not his pragmatic attitude. The reason that even some who hated him had to compromise with Roosevelt or give way was the political force he could marshal. His theory of change was no more about compromise than it was about high-minded words: It was about power. Compromise was a side-effect, a tactic at most.

But the central place of power does not mean idealism had no place in the New Deal. Roosevelt explained what he was doing, and why, in language that was more Sanders than Clinton, more vision than wonkery. He famously called for a Second Bill of Rights, an economic program of security, good work, and material dignity. Going back to the Founders to ground the welfare state is, let’s say, idealistic. And, while F.D.R. was willing to compromise, he was also willing to draw hard lines, calling out “economic royalists” and saying of his enemies, “They are unanimous in their hate for me–and I welcome their hatred.”

Wow. You might hear that from Ted Cruz or possibly Donald Trump this year, but not from any of the Democrats. Roosevelt used the highest idealistic language and the toughest words of conflict. They conveyed the vision behind his program and forced other politicians to form battle lines on the landscape he defined. Then, and only then, he compromised, on his terms.

The banal response to Krugman would be that most politicians campaign in poetry and govern in prose – with the exception of some recent Democrats, notably Hillary, who ease his admirably wonkish heart by never leaving prose mode. Don’t fear the poetry! one might say: it is not a theory of change, just a normal way of talking in a democracy.

But the real answer is deeper. Obama ran in poetry and has governed in prose, in quite a literal sense that one could diagram in the sentences of his speeches and press conferences. But in the stronger, older tradition of campaigns based on ideas and programs rather than personalities, candidates run to build power, and use idealistic language to explain why that power matters. Then, if they get to govern, they use it.

That is a theory of change. To answer Krugman’s question: yes, it has worked. In fact, it may be the only theory of change that has ever made democracy real. It is politics for adults.

    We Are All Foodies Now

With the price of gas falling below $ 2 a gallon in the U.S., consumers are reallocating spending not on more “stuff,” but on experiences. And one of the most popular experience-spending categories is food.

In fact, in America, there’s evidence that we’re all foodies now.

That phenomenon was explained to me by Phil Lempert, the famed SupermarketGuru, who led a webinar on food trends for 2016 this week. I carefully listened, and wove his observations into my own lens on the growing world of retail health.

What’s underneath this foodie phenomenon? Putting on my economic specs, I can tell you that The Great Recession of 2008 transformed the way consumers consume and spend money. It’s a DIY culture now, with more people wanting to cook at home. Home-cooking is healthier, cheaper, and tastes better – when you have the skills and the best ingredients at hand.

But there’s another new consumer behavior emerging, which Shawn DuBravac of the Consumer Technology Association found in analyzing 2015 holiday shopping behavior. While consumer holiday spending held flat between 2014 and 2015, what people are spending their hard-won dollars on has shifted. Spenders are spending less on stuff and things, and more on experiences. Furthermore, American’s aren’t spending more of their gas dividend – the saved margin on cheaper petrol – on hard or soft goods. They’re spending on experiences.

Food is one of those things that we experience, and people are willing to spend more money on food for the experience, and for health benefits.

Fred shared statistics that paint a clear picture of a consumer increasingly seeking health at the retail food store. 59% of Americans actively seek out information about nutrition. 68% of people want to know where their food comes from (known as traceability). According to Euromonitor International’s Top 10 Global Consumer Trends for 2016, the most important food attributes consumers seek are “all natural,” limited sugar or no added sugar, and limited or no artificial ingredients.

On the DIY front, 9 in 10 people cook food at home at least three times a week. But they say they want to gain skills to be better cooks in the kitchen. Witness the growth of subscription food kits that ship direct to peoples’ homes; among a growing list, there are Blue Apron, HelloFresh, PeachDish, Plated, PlateJoy, and for vegans, the Purple Carrot co-founded by the ultimate foodie Mark Bittman.

These subscription packages fit new foodie consumers’ demands: most of them are portion controlled, offer value for money, high quality ingredients, no-waste, and are an on-ramp to new adventures in taste – part of that foodie experience people increasingly look for. “Consumers’ taste buds are bored,” Phil said. 74% of people in the U.S. seek more adventures and flavor in food choices. We’re adventuring in food: sprinkling in more spices, trying novel ingredients, and traveling the globe for new-new taste journeys.

While taste and quality are the most important factors for food choices, price is not a consideration that falls into the top ten attributes people shop for in food purchases. Eaters have a new way of eating: first to lose weight and eat healthier. 58% of people say eating healthier is important to them, according to the Supermarket Guru’s consumer survey.

This new foodie is empowered and engaged in health and nutrition. So food manufacturers are responding with announcements like removing artificial “everything” from foodstuffs, and shortening the list of ingredients in packaged foods. The magic number of ingredients, Phil said, is “five.” In addition, foods labeled with some kind of health attribute increase sales by about 13%. So the reason food companies are going healthier isn’t just to be good citizens: it’s to help them make more money.

The traditional grocery store is being challenged by the new foodie, who is shopping for food across a long list of retail options. Consider: supermarkets, Big Box stores, convenience (“C”) stores, drug stores, warehouse clubs (like BJ’s Warehouse, Costco and Sam’s Club), food trucks, dollar stores, mass market, vending, meal kits, home delivery, restaurants, and online (think: Amazon’s growing footprint in food delivery, and the growing home delivery channel (such as FreshDirect and InstaCart).

Beyond pure delivery convenience, foodie-consumers are also looking for counsel and support on nutrition and cooking. The advent of grocery stores hiring retail dieticians that provide real-time assistance to store shoppers is the beginning of this growing trend. With shoppers increasingly turning to mobile phones for shopping lists, nutrition label reads, and product comparisons, the mobile channel will increasingly support foodies in their search for health and nutrition empowerment as people look to substitute or complement food as medicine.

I asked Phil about the role of the pharmacy in the supermarket as a health destination. He said that most supermarkets first got into the pharmacy business because it was profitable. Today, there is a blend between the pharmacy and the food aisles, where registered dieticians can work hand-in-hand with pharmacists to put together symposia in the store. Often, registered dieticians have offices adjacent to the store pharmacies. Phil’s vision is for these two professionals to work with a third, the store culinarian-chef, to capitalize on this triple-threat’s full complement of skills and counsel for consumers’ health benefit.

Think about how you currently curate your health and wellness in your food shopping at grocers and the growing array of retail food shopping channels and platforms. You may be surprised where you find health and wellness. ALDI, which features low prices, is removing certified synthetic colors, partially hydrogenated oils, and added MSG to their private label offerings (which make up 90% of the store’s products) and is using the mantra “Eat Good. Feel Good. Spend Less.”

No longer will we be limited to shopping around the perimeter of the supermarket for health. Health will be embedded everywhere in the retail food ecosystem.

    Knowing Where to Look

In one of his final interviews, the author/philosopher Aldous Huxley was asked to sum up his life’s work. What he said was this:

It is a bit embarrassing to have been concerned with the human problem all one’s life and find at the end that one has no more to offer by way of advice than “Try to be a little kinder.”

While I actually think that’s beautiful in and of itself, I also love the question: If you had to sum up everything you’ve learned about life in one or two sentences, what would they be?

When I began studying the principles behind the inside-out understanding, I asked that question of a number of long-term teachers, students, and practitioners. While the answers ranged from “I’ve learned to be grateful” to “It’s all made up and it’s all OK”, when someone asked me the same question recently, I was surprised to hear this answer come out of my mouth:

“I know what to do when I don’t know what to do. When I’m stuck, I know where to look. Better still, I know where not to look.”

There is something so unbelievably comforting to me about that that I wanted to take a bit of time this week to explore it with you…

For many years, I attempted to amass a database of strategies for success and happiness that I could fall back on when my automatic pilot habitual thinking wasn’t enough. Whenever I found myself stuck on a project or a bit down in myself, I would go to that database, represented by over 3000 books that have filled the walls (and at times overflowed onto the floors) of my home over the years.

If I couldn’t find the answer in my memory bank or my books, I’d go off to the bookstore or on to the web in search of the solution to my very real seeming problem.

    Until…

One day I realized that if the answers were in those 3000 books, I would be the happiest, most successful person on the planet. And I knew damn well that I wasn’t. So I went on a “book fast”, which was really an “information fast”. I stopped inputting new data into my brain, and decided instead to let the dust settle inside my head and see what was left. To my amazement, in the emptiness that remained, I found my own wisdom.

It wasn’t so much in my head as in my whole body – as much feeling as thought and as much common sense as deep insight. It appeared as a knowing – a warm feeling of “right” without any “righteousness” attached. That feeling has become my friend over the years, even as I’ve fallen back into the strategies and tactics of others from time to time.

In the early days, I tried to encourage myself with positive slogans like “Go with your knowing, even when you’re wrong!” to “I know that I’ll know when I know.” But the truth was, that experience of knowing happened far too seldom for me to rely on it completely, and time and again I’d find myself going back to doing things as I’d always done them.

And then one day it dawned on me that the problem wasn’t that my wisdom only spoke with me sporadically – it was that I only looked inside to find it when I’d absolutely given up on everything else.

Once it became obvious to me where to look – within, away from the known, towards the power and intelligence behind life – I found myself accessing wisdom more of the time and earlier in the game than ever before. Insights became a reliable way to navigate instead of “lucky breaks”, and to this day the quieter I get the more obvious things become.

Here’s a metaphor I sometimes use with clients:

You wake up in a completely darkened room. At first you remain completely still, too afraid to even move, but soon you realize you are not alone. There are others there with you in the dark, and they have learned to function relatively effectively.

Many of them have simply memorized their way around a relatively small area so they can navigate it with confidence as long as nothing out of the ordinary comes to pass. Others have maps, carrying the accumulated wisdom of others but difficult to read in the dark and easy to misinterpret.

There are some who act as a light in the darkness, filled with the flame of their own wisdom and casting enough light to both draw others to them and guide them forward.

But the secret that so few teach because so few know is this:

The divine spark of wisdom is alive and well in all of us, just waiting for the gift of our own attention to help it burst into flame.

It turns out we don’t need to know what to do – we only need to know where to look.

Have fun, learn heaps, and may the light within you illuminate the world around you!

    With all my love,
    2014-08-17-20130402michaelsig.gif

Turns Out Smoking Pot in Your Teens Didn’t Make You Dumber

Cultural attitudes in this country toward recreational and medical marijuana use are swiftly changing: Earlier this month, for instance, New York City’s first medical marijuana dispensary opened its doors. The latest research suggests that half of all Americans will use marijuana at least once, and just over one-third of high-school seniors have used the drug in the past year. And yet those PSAs of the ’90s are hard to forget, and many — scientists included — are still unsure about the long-term cognitive effects of marijuana, especially in teens.

Related: What It’s Like to Be a Stoner Who’s Allergic to Marijuana

Now, by following two groups of twins from late childhood through late adolescence and early adulthood, an international team of scientists showed that teens who had used pot did indeed have lower scores on cognitive tests — but, crucially, those differences were likely caused by other genetic and social factors within the family rather than marijuana itself.

Twin studies help researchers to understand the various genetic and environmental factors that contribute to a specific outcome, such as marijuana use, since monozygotic (identical) twins share 100 percent of their DNA, whereas dizygotic (fraternal) twins share 50 percent, just like normal siblings. However, the environmental conditions for these twins are considered to be broadly similar. By determining the effect of one twin’s marijuana use on the likelihood that the other will also light up, scientists can begin to parse out how much biological and social factors contribute.

That’s what a group of researchers from the U.S. and Sweden did, using two different groups of twins, the Risk Factors for Antisocial Behavior study from Southern California and the Minnesota Twin Family Study, that together resulted in 3,066 participants. The scientists asked about marijuana use at several different time points, and assessed several different types of intelligence and cognition. As had been reported in several previous studies, the new study published this week in PNAS found that marijuana-using teens had lower scores on cognitive and intelligence tests, and also showed declines on crystallized intelligence, or the ability to use previously acquired knowledge and skills.

Related: The Women Hoping to Become New York’s Pot Moguls

However, the teens who used marijuana the most didn’t show greater declines in cognition and intelligence than teens who only lit up occasionally, nor did these teens show greater declines than their twins who didn’t use. The authors conclude that these results show that marijuana use itself doesn’t seem to cause decreased intelligence and cognition, but rather that familial factors lead to both of these outcomes. Whether or not you’re allergic to the stuff is a whole other story.

What Every Environmentalist Needs to Know about Capitalism: A Citizen’s Guide to Capitalism and the Environment

What Every Environmentalist Needs to Know about Capitalism: A Citizen’s Guide to Capitalism and the Environment

Praise for Foster and Magdoff’s The Great Financial Crisis: In this timely and thorough analysis of the current financial crisis, Foster and Magdoff explore its roots and the radical changes that might be undertaken in response. . . . This book makes a valuable contribution to the ongoing examination of our current debt crisis, one that deserves our full attention.–"Publishers Weekly" There is a growing consensus that the planet is heading toward environmental catastrophe: climate change, ocean acidification, ozone depletion, global freshwater use, loss of biodiversity, and chemical pollution all threaten our future unless we act. What is less clear is how humanity should respond. The contemporary environmental movement is the site of many competing plans and prescriptions, and composed of a diverse set of actors, from militant activists to corporate chief executives. This short, readable book is a sharply argued manifesto for those environmentalists who reject schemes of "green capitalism" or piecemeal reform. Environmental and economic scholars Magdoff and Foster contend that the struggle to reverse ecological degradation requires a firm grasp of economic reality. Going further, they argue that efforts to reform capitalism along environmental lines or rely solely on new technology to avert catastrophe misses the point. The main cause of the looming environmental disaster is the driving logic of the system itself, and those in power–no matter how "green"–are incapable of making the changes that are necessary. What Every Environmentalist Needs To Know about Capitalism tackles the two largest issues of our time, the ecological crisis and the faltering capitalist economy, in a way that is thorough, accessible, and sure to provoke debate in the environmental movement.

Democrats Need to Dial It Back a Notch

I am a traditional liberal Democrat and over my six plus decades on Earth have witnessed the wild swings of fortune that have taken my party from Kennedy’s Camelot to Jimmy Carter’s attempt at public service restoration to the economic resurgence under Bill Clinton to hope and change under Barack Obama. In between we have endured landslide defeats at the hands of Nixon and Reagan, and two Bush Presidencies, one ended after four years and the other secured under what can only be described as suspicious circumstances and mercifully terminated after eight years of historic blunder.

Through all of it I remain a loyal adherent to the principles and policies advocated by the Democratic Party, particularly in light of the emergence of the Tea Party and far-right evangelical dominance that has for all intents and purposes made moderation a dead issue in the GOP. The gulf separating the two parties with respect to policy and approach to governing is arguably wider than at any time in my lifetime. And while the first votes have yet to be cast in the 2016 Presidential election cycle the general appeal of the parties to the shifting demographic realities that are changing the face of the American electorate are crystal clear: namely, the Democrats firmly embrace diversity and tolerance and the Republicans pander to xenophobia and a closed door approach to inclusion.

I could not be prouder to be a Democrat in light of these broad trends. However, it is somewhat disconcerting as a Democrat to watch the increasing level of personal animosity between the two leading Democratic Presidential candidates. I identify with the Progressive wing of the Democratic Party and strongly align myself with the policy prescriptions that are offered by Bernie Sanders to the major issues of our time. I strongly applaud a primary process that affords all Americans the opportunity to engage in a thoughtful and provocative examination of those issues.

However, what started out as a cordial and respectful disagreement on approaches to issues not the issues themselves is quickly devolving into a knock down drag out fight with personal recriminations being tossed about in roundhouse fashion. Most disconcerting is a growing sense of division among Democrats that has the potential to drive a wedge in what should be slam dunk opposition to whomever may emerge as the Republican nominee.

This is totally unacceptable and can and should be avoided at all costs. Both campaigns need to tamp down their personal differences and focus on the strongest thing that the Democrats have to offer this year and that is a rebuke of the mean-spirited and counterintuitive policy prescriptions that the Republican Party has to offer. Primary voters will sift through the differing policy prescriptions offered by the leading candidates and make decisions on who is best to lead the nation in pursuit of those policies.

So to my friends on the left I leave you with two words: Ralph Nader. Bill Maher, on his show Real Time last Friday confessed to Al Gore, whom he sheepishly introduced as the 43rd President of the United States, that he supported Nader in 2000 and that he f@#ked up. Well, whatever your thoughts on the impact of the Nader run in 2000 as regards to the final outcome one cannot help but feel that it did not help and when the margins of victory and defeat are razor thin everything is magnified.

To Democratic voters I only offer that wearing your emotions on your sleeves is admirable and noble and no one should dissuade you from exercising your heartfelt passions for the candidate of your choice. But, and this is crucial, it is absolutely imperative that you also leave enough in the tank so that should your candidate not survive there is enough juice to help the primary victor prevail in November.

Tempering your emotions to allow that the larger picture is every bit as important as the immediate one should emanate from the campaigns and their principals and I would implore both the Clinton and Sanders camps to ensure that it does. But also, to the grassroots activists and supporters who pour their hearts out in the trenches it is your responsibility not only to yourselves but to those who will follow to reap the benefits of positive and constructive issue-based policies. Oftentimes this means getting the best you can get under the circumstances. To sacrifice that option you run the risk of proverbially cutting off your nose to spite your face, and unfortunately there are a lot of disgruntled conservatives who will help you do so.

What Chronic Lyme Disease Taught Me About Life

    2016-01-19-1453229714-4185453-huffpost.jpg

After years of searching for why I was always in pain, I was finally correctly diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease when my hands decided not to work anymore and I decided not to accept my current diagnoses. Initially, it was dismissed as early onset osteoarthritis and lupus. Then when I was told I had Lyme disease, I thought finally with the correct diagnosis, I would be better in no time flat.

    I was wrong.

If you don’t know much about chronic Lyme disease, I’ll leave the description to having arthritis, lupus, MS, Alzheimer’s, fibromyalgia, severe chronic fatigue, ADD and dyslexia all rolled into one. I couldn’t get out of bed, I had a hard time driving, I couldn’t take care of the kids or home, I forgot where I parked at the grocery store, I got lost on the way home, I couldn’t find the words to speak and I forgot what I was saying before I even finished a sentence. The best part for my husband was that if we got in a fight, I would lose my train of thought mid-way through my sentence. It sure ended a disagreement quickly.

Now, I could go on and on about how upsetting it is that Lyme has no set protocol and how the medical community is still arguing about whether or not the disease even exists in its chronic form. I could tell you about all the days that I spent crying on the bathroom floor wishing my life was over and that God would just take me so I could end my suffering. I could also tell you about how lonely it was to have an invisible disease around people who didn’t understand because they couldn’t see anything wrong with me.

But what I really want to talk about is what I learned from having a disease that made me want to die almost every day of my life. I used to think that the reason I went through the pain of Lyme disease was so that I could become a master herbalist and “save the world” of this horrible disease.

    I was wrong again.

What I found out through telling my story over and over again is that I really want people to live a life of no regrets. When I would cry in bed, I was crying because of the loss of my life, not because of my pain. I would look back in bitterness and wonder if this really was all there was left. I had a bucket list of things to do and I felt like I would never get to them. I thought I was destined to watch my children grow up from the view from my bed. And while I would cry, I would also think of all the times I sacrificed myself for others. I tried to be the wife I thought my husband wanted and I tried to be the kind of daughter my mother wanted. All the time, I squelched myself and thought that I was going to be loved more.

    I was wrong yet again.

Squelching myself through my life and not allowing myself to be who I wanted to be created a big void in my heart and a bitterness and anger towards the people I thought I was doing it all for. I let my husband pick the house he wanted, I folded the towels in thirds for him instead of quarters like I like them folded. I went after corporate success to make my mother proud. I said yes to all the friends who needed me to help them do this or that and pushed my schedule aside. I didn’t get more love. I didn’t find more success. I didn’t feel fulfilled. It drained my life and all I found were regrets that flooded my mind as I reflected on my life.

I know we each have purpose and greatness within us, but society has taught us to be a certain way to be accepted. We squelch our true selves for whatever reason we feel we should. In the meantime, we create a life for ourselves that is unfulfilling, meaningless and full of regrets.

What Lyme disease taught me about life was to live it with no regrets. I am so much better now after using my herbalist training and other natural methods. Please, if you have chronic Lyme disease, don’t lose hope of getting better! I wish for everyone not to have to go through something so huge that it makes you reflect like I did, but I also see my experience as a blessing because now that I’ve gotten a second chance at life, I’m bound and determined to make sure that I live my purpose, be my true self and not waste time with meaningless junk.

It’s my turn now — no regrets. Now go make it your turn too!

After Obama Pardon, NFL Player’s Mom Finally Gets To Watch Him Play In Person

Sunday was an extraordinary day for NFL player Demaryius Thomas — and it wasn’t just because his team, the Denver Broncos, got one step closer to the Super Bowl.

For the very first time in his pro football career, Thomas’ biggest fan was in the stands to cheer him on: his mom.

As NFL.com reports, Thomas’ mom, Katrina Stuckey Smith, has been in a Florida prison since 2000, serving a 20-year sentence for drug trafficking.

She, however, was one of 46 nonviolent drug offenders whose sentences were commuted by President Barack Obama back in July.

“God is good,” Thomas reacted to the news at the time, calling his mom “his best lady.”

Smith was released from prison to a halfway house in November, but she was reportedly barred from travelling for 60 days.

Once that ban lifted though, Smith had just one desire — to see her son play football as a pro.

Decked out in Broncos garb and eagerly snapping photos of her son on the field, Smith was in Denver on Sunday night to watch her son’s team play the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Broncos bested the Steelers 23-16, and will advance to next weekend’s AFC championship game.

According to 9News, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning helped make the day even more special for mom and son. Manning reportedly gave Thomas the game ball so he could give it to Smith.

Thomas, who was just a pre-teen when his mom was sentenced to prison, was drafted by the Broncos in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He’d previously played college football for Georgia Tech.

11 Tweaks to Your Morning Routine Will Make Your Entire Day More Productive

I don’t know anyone who couldn’t use a little boost in their energy and self-control.

Researchers at the University of Nottingham recently published findings from their exploration of 83 separate studies on energy and self-control. What they found will change the way you start your day.

The researchers found that self-control and energy are not only intricately linked but also finite, daily resources that tire much like a muscle. Even though we don’t always realize it, as the day goes on, we have increased difficulty exerting self-control and focusing on our work. As self-control wears out, we feel tired and find tasks to be more difficult and our mood sours.

This exhaustion of self-control kills your productivity, and it makes the morning hours, when self-control is highest, the most important hours of the day.

But the trick isn’t just to spend your morning hours working; it’s to do the right things in the morning that will make your energy and self-control last as long as possible.

“For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?'” And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.”

    – Steve Jobs

The Nottingham research has led me to uncover ways we can break bad habits in the morning and maximize our energy and self-control throughout the day.

Whether you naturally wake up feeling alert and productive or wake up with the brainpower of a zombie, these tips will help you transform your morning routine and set a positive tone that lasts the entire day.

Start with exercise. Researchers at the University of Bristol found that people who exercise during the workday have more energy and a more positive outlook, which are both critical to getting things done. Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. Exercising first thing in the morning ensures that you’ll have the time for it, and it improves your self-control and energy levels all day long.

But drink some lemon water first. Drinking lemon water as soon as you wake up spikes your energy levels physically and mentally. Lemon water gives you steady, natural energy that lasts the length of the day by improving nutrient absorption in your stomach. You need to drink it first thing in the morning (on an empty stomach) to ensure full absorption. You should also wait 15-30 minutes after drinking it before eating (perfect time to squeeze in some exercise). Lemons are packed with nutrients; they’re chock full of potassium, vitamin C, and antioxidants. If you’re under 150 pounds, drink the juice of half a lemon (a full lemon if you’re over 150 pounds). Don’t drink the juice without water because it’s hard on your teeth.

No screen time until breakfast. When you dive straight into e-mails, texts, and Facebook, you lose focus and your morning succumbs to the wants and needs of other people. It’s much healthier to take those precious first moments of the day to do something relaxing that sets a calm, positive tone for your day. Jumping right into electronics has the opposite effect — it’s a frantic way to start your day. Exercising, meditating, or even watching the birds out the window are all great ways to start the day.

Eat a real breakfast. Eating anything at all for breakfast puts you ahead of a lot of people. People who eat breakfast are less likely to be obese, they have more stable blood-sugar levels, and they tend to be less hungry over the course of the day. And these are just the statistics for people who eat any breakfast. When you eat a healthy breakfast, the doors to a productive day swing wide open. A healthy breakfast gives you energy, improves your short-term memory, and helps you to concentrate more intensely and for longer periods.

Set goals for the day. Research shows that having concrete goals is correlated with huge increases in confidence and feelings of control. Setting goals specific to the day puts everything into motion. Narrow your goals down to a few achievable ones that can easily be broken down into steps. Vague goals such as “I want to finish writing my article” are counter-productive because they fail to include the “how” of things. The same goal re-phrased in a more functional way would read something like this: “I am going to finish my article by writing each of the three sections, spending no more than an hour on each section.” Now, you have more than simply something you want to achieve — you have a way to achieve it.

Getting your morning started off right at home is important, but it’s only half the battle. If you fail to maintain that tone once you set foot in the office, your morning can lose momentum quickly. Here’s how you can maintain a productive tone once you hit the office:

First, clean your workspace. Even though it’s a pain to clean right when you get into work, it makes a big difference to your ability to concentrate. A Princeton University study found that people who worked in a clean workspace out-performed those who worked in a cluttered one because clutter pulls your attention away from your work. In fact, the effects of clutter on concentration are not all that different from the effects of multi-tasking.

No e-mail until you’ve eaten three frogs. “Eating a frog” is the greatest antidote to procrastination, and the most productive people know the importance of biting into this delicacy first thing in the morning. In other words, spend your morning on something that requires a high level of concentration that you don’t want to do, and you’ll get it done in short order. Make a habit of eating three frogs before you check your e-mail because e-mail is a major distraction that enables procrastination and wastes precious mental energy.

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.”

    – Mark Twain

Assign times to your to-do list, and monitor your progress against your goals. There’s no point in setting goals in the morning if you don’t check in on them. Look at what you’ve done so far with a critical eye. If you realize you’re behind schedule or doing a shoddy job, it’s important to adjust your goals or your work ethic so that you can move intentionally through your day.

Keep morning meetings on schedule. Meetings are the biggest time waster there is, and they can ruin an otherwise productive morning. People who use their mornings effectively know that a meeting will drag on forever if they let it, so they inform everyone at the onset that they’ll stick to the intended schedule. This sets a limit that motivates everyone to be more focused and efficient. Keep your morning meetings on time, and your entire day will stay on track.

Don’t multitask. Multi-tasking in the morning — when you have lots to do, tons of energy, and it feels like you can do two or three things at once — is tempting, but it sets your whole day back. Research conducted at Stanford University confirmed that multitasking is less productive than doing a single thing at a time. The researchers found that people who are regularly bombarded with several streams of electronic information cannot pay attention, recall information, or switch from one job to another as well as those who complete one task at a time.

But what if some people have a special gift for multitasking? The Stanford researchers compared groups of people based on their tendency to multitask and their belief that it helps their performance. They found that heavy multi-taskers (those who multitask a lot and feel that it boosts their performance) were actually worse at multitasking than those who like to do a single thing at a time. The frequent multi-taskers performed worse because they had more trouble organizing their thoughts and filtering out irrelevant information, and they were slower at switching from one task to another. Ouch!

Multitasking reduces your efficiency and performance because your brain can only focus adequately on one thing at a time. When you try to do two things at once, your brain lacks the capacity to perform both tasks successfully.

Finally, say no. No is a powerful word that will protect your precious mornings. When it’s time to say no, avoid phrases such as “I don’t think I can” or “I’m not certain.” Saying no to a new commitment honors your existing commitments and gives you the opportunity to successfully fulfill them while your mind is fresh. Research conducted at the University of California in San Francisco showed that the more difficulty that you have saying no, the more likely you are to experience stress, burnout, and even depression. Learn to use no, and it will lift your mood as well as your productivity.

    Bringing it all together

The right morning routine can make your day, every day. The trick is to be intentional about your mornings, understanding that a.m. hours are precious and should be handled with care.

What do you do in the morning to start your day off right? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

The 62 Richest People On Earth Now Hold As Much Wealth As The Poorest 3.5 Billion

All the money in the world is growing ever more concentrated in the hands of just a few people, a report released Sunday night makes clear.

Just 62 ultra-rich, mostly white men — a list that includes Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, the Koch Brothers and the Walmart heirs — have as much wealth as the bottom half of humanity. Five years ago, it took 388 rich guys to achieve that status.

The wealth of the richest 62 has increased an astonishing 44 percent since 2010, to $ 1.76 trillion. Meanwhile, the wealth of the bottom half of the world dropped by 41 percent.

“This is terrible,” Gawain Kripke, Oxfam’s Policy Director, told The Huffington Post. “No one credible will say this is good for the world or good for the economy.”

While the wealthy might argue that their rising wealth is just a fabulous sign of economic prosperity (the “you’re just jealous” rationale), the disproportionate growth at the top is keeping those on the bottom from climbing out of poverty, Oxfam notes in its report.

“It is unjust that people living in poverty are not getting the boost to their incomes that they desperately need, while already privileged capital owners receive a greater share of income and wealth,” the report says.

Kripke also points out that wide inequality is no longer seen as an unfortunate consequence of economic growth. Now many economists — most famously Thomas Piketty – contend that gross inequality actually slows down growth, as fewer people can afford to buy stuff, and creates economic and political instability.

Indeed, Piketty says extreme wealth inequality helps fuel instability in the Middle East.

Rising wealth and income inequality is not simply an issue of fairness or social justice or economic growth.

There’s a wide body of research that shows inequality adversely affects the health of those at the bottom, raising the risk of cardiovascular disease, increasing suicide rates and shortening lifespans, Linda Rosenstock, a professor at the UCLA school of public health and the former director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, told The Huffington Post last year.

“There’s an added reason to be concerned that income inequality is growing,” Rosenstock said.

Much of the astonishing rise of wealth at the top is tied up with the booming stock market, as Credit Suisse noted in its Global Wealth Report last year. That report, which Oxfam used in its analysis along with a list of the richest people in the world from Forbes, determined that global inequality had reached a new milestone: The richest 1 percent of the world’s population now own half the world’s wealth.

Stocks have been on a tear since the economic recovery kicked in. The S&P 500 is up 46 percent from 2010. Unfortunately, most normals have missed out on the gold rush. Most of us get our money from paychecks – not stocks. And wages have largely gone nowhere since the recovery, even as executive pay has soared.

But it’s not just the stock market driving the rise in inequality. Oxfam’s report also points a finger at tax dodging and urges governments worldwide to get a handle on tax avoidance by wealthy individuals and corporations.

“It’s a significant loss to governments,” Kripke said. The rich use exotic strategies to park money so that it’s invisible and inaccessible to governments, who could redistribute those dollars to their citizens, he said. “We need reform on this.”

Understanding Institutional Shareholder Activism: A Comparative Study Of The Uk And China

Understanding Institutional Shareholder Activism: A Comparative Study Of The Uk And China

Institutional shareholder participation has long been considered as vital to good corporate governance yet its potential does not seem to have been realized. The recent banking crisis exposed the passivity of some institutional shareholders, many of whom appear to have chosen to sell their stakes in the banks rather than intervene or challenge the board when they realized the strategies followed by the banks were excessively risky. Institutional shareholders'' role to scrutinize and monitor the decisions of boards and executive management in the banking sector in the UK is considered by many to be a failure, resulting in the phenomenon of ''ownerless corporations'', as described by Lord Myners. In China, despite the fast rising of institutional investment in the securities market, institutional shareholders have not yet played a contributory role in monitoring corporate managers in listed companies.Drawing on empirical evidence this book seeks to systematically analyses institutional shareholders'' incentives to activism to explain when and why shareholder activism will occur. The book puts forward a model which explains the factors that determine institutional shareholders'' propensity for activism. The model both elaborates the collective benefits of activism as a means of achieving managerial accountability asks whether and when shareholder activism is rational for any individual shareholder. The book then goes to on to apply these finding to both the UK and China in order to explain the varying levels of shareholder activism in each jurisdiction. The book is the first to take an in-depth look at institutional share-holder activism in China providing prescriptions to promote greater shareholder engagement and exploring the potential it holds for improving corporate governance in the region.

Happy People Tend To Value Time Over Money

    Meet Maggie and Tina.

Maggie is willing to work longer hours in exchange for a fatter paycheck. Tina is willing to take a smaller paycheck so she can work less and have more free time.

Now that we’re all acquainted, who do you think you are more like: Maggie or Tina?

Researchers used questions like this to figure out what people valued more – time or money – and whether that preference affected an individual’s overall well-being.

    Turns out, it does.

According to a study involving more than 4,600 participants recently published by the Society of Personality and Social Psychology, people who value their time more than their money tend to be happier than those who value their money more than their time.

To figure this out, researchers from the University of British Columbia surveyed working American adults, students at the University of British Columbia, and adults visiting a Vancouver science museum who volunteered to participate in the questioning.

Slightly more than half of respondents valued their time over money, and, on average, those individuals were also more likely to report higher levels of happiness than those who valued money over time.

“Imagine that the world is made up of Tinas and Maggies,” Ashley Whillans, the study’s lead author, told The Huffington Post.

“We’re seeing that the Tinas of the world are walking around a little happier than the Maggies of the world because they are making everyday decisions that lead them to prioritize time over money.”

The participants’ income and gender did not affect their answers, although the researchers note that the study did not include participants living at the poverty level, who may need to prioritize money in order to survive.

    Setting Up The Surveys

Each survey included at least one trade-off question that involved a major life decision (like the one at the top of this article) in order to determine the individual’s overall preference of time or money.

Participants were then given a series of questions that involved more mundane, everyday decisions, such as if they were willing to drive farther to a cheaper gas station, or settle for a closer, more expensive option. Another survey entered the participants into a lottery, where they were asked to choose between two prizes: $ 50 cash or a $ 120 voucher for a time-saving service, such as housecleaning.

The answers to these questions were then compared to how the participants rated their general happiness or well-being at the start of the survey.

While the results show that valuing time is linked to greater levels of happiness, Whillans said more research needs to be done to strengthen that connection.

    The Takeaway

Whillans said she hopes the study’s findings will inspire people to sacrifice money if it means more time to do things that will make them happier in the long run.

“All these kinds of everyday and major life decisions often require a trade-off between time or money that most people don’t always recognize,” Whillans said.

“Having more free time is likely more important than having more money,” Whillans said in a statement. ”Even giving up a few hours of a paycheck to volunteer at a food bank may have more bang for your buck in making you feel happier.”
